Several hundred women from around the country took up the call of the Women of Lancashire to demonstrate in Parliament Square on Wednesday.
Dressed in white costumes with suffragette sashes, they raised their voices demanding an end to fracking.
Meanwhile, inside Westminster Hall, MPs debated and questioned Claire Perry, Minister of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy over government plans to fast-track fracking.
Countries, states, and councils around the world and in the UK itself have banned fracking. However, the UK government is forcing the industry onto communities. It proposes to remove the need for planning permission by allowing fracking sites to become “permitted development”.
The demonstrators denounced the lack of democratic control, 100 years after some women won the opportunity to have a say. They outlined the massive damage caused by fracking, saying it was “all for the profit of a few – at the sacrifice for the many”.
