Refugee from Nazis speaks at vigil for Ukraine’s children

Joining the vigil at Liverpool Street to demand the release of Ukrainian children abducted by Russian forces following their invasion was Alf Dubs, now 92, who himself arrived at the same station in September 1939 as a six-year-old refugee from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. He was one of more than 650 mainly Jewish children rescued by Nicholas Winton, a British financier, who organised the famous ‘Kindertransport’. Dubs was met in London by his father Hubert and later his mother was able to join them.

Dubs became a Labour MP and later director of the Refugee Council. He now sits in the House of Lords and still campaigns for the victims of oppression.

Joining Dubs at Liverpool Street were supporters of the Ukraine Solidary Campaign (USC), campaigning journalist John Sweeney, members of the Ukrainian community in London, trade unionists from the GMB and ASLEF and supporters of Real Democracy Movement.

The USC and several other Ukrainian groups plus UK trade unions, are holding a march for the children of Ukraine on Sunday, 1 June, assembling at 1pm, Marble Arch.
